Mentor Girls

In Maasai and Kuria communities, many girls face enormous barriers to achieving their dreams. They are pressured into female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriage before finishing school, often left vulnerable to teenage pregnancies without access to accurate information or support. Growing up in extreme poverty and inequality, most have never been asked what they want to become in life. At the same time, boys are rarely included in conversations about girls and reproductive health, reinforcing harmful norms that hold girls and their communities back.

At HOPE for Girls @ VISA, we respond to these challenges through Adopt-a-Girl Mentorship program which pairs adolescent girls with inspiring mentors. These mentors share their own stories of overcoming pressure to undergo FGM or early marriage and demonstrate what is possible when girls stay in school. Alongside one-on-one coaching, girls participate in School-based Mentorship and SRHR Clubs– safe spaces where both boys and girls can openly discuss self-worth, reproductive health, healthy relationships and life skills. Through these clubs, girls build confidence, set goals and begin to chart their own futures, while boys are engaged as allies and champions for change.

The results are powerful. over 1,100 students have participated in our mentorship and SRHR clubs, guided by 26 trained mentors and coaches. Girls in the program are resisting harmful practices, avoiding early marriage and continuing their education with greater confidence. We have also seen noticeable reduction in school dropouts caused by teenage pregnancies, while boys are stepping forward as advocates and for girls education and protection. Together, they are reshaping community attitudes and creating a culture of support for girls’ education and rights.

When a girl is mentored, she finds her voice. When a boy is engaged, he becomes her ally. When both are empowered, entire communities change.
